Healthy Snacking: Makhana Bhel
Satiate your hunger pangs with this healthy evening snack! Whether working from home or office, hunger pangs get the better of us and most times make us resort to unhealthy binging or eating patterns. While you may like your cookies & biscuits, they do not satiate your hunger and aren’t enough to keep you full for longer hours.
‘Roasted Makhana’ or ‘Fox nuts’ also popularly known as ‘Lotus seeds’ or ‘Phool Makhana’ are especially a favorite in the fasting season. This low-calorie snack is light on your stomach, but also super-filling. Enriched with the goodness of protein, potassium, phosphorus, fiber, magnesium, iron & zinc, Makhanas are low in cholesterol, fat, sodium as well as in the glycemic index. Other than anti-aging enzymes, the presence of a natural flavonoid called kaempferol helps prevent inflammation. Makhanas, therefore, make for an ideal snack to binge on while on a weight loss diet, or when you’re just trying to eat healthily. So let’s dig into the recipe!
The Ingredients: Roasted Makhana: 50 gms or 2 cups Onion: 1 medium (chopped) Tomato: 1 medium (chopped) Roasted Peanut: 2 tbsp Lemon juice: 1 tbsp Rock salt: as per taste Chat masala: as per taste Fresh Coriander: 1 tbsp (chopped)
The Process: Crush the roasted Makhana with a rolling pin. To it, add chopped onion, tomato, and any other veggies you like. Also, add roasted peanuts. Now, add rock salt. Add lemon juice to make it tangy. You can also add chat masala & black pepper to make it spicy. Now mix everything, and serve fresh! You can also top it with some nylon sev.
